A Miracle Made Possible by Everyone’s Effort

Woodwork Class for playground construction… multi-generation, nonbelievers joined together to make beautiful piece of work, UofN playground, ‘Let’s Play’

From 1st of July 2019 through 20th of July, two mothers, twenties to eighties UofN Jeju staffs, twenty non-believer neighbors joined together at ‘Woodwork Class for Playground Construction’ to make beautiful UofN Jeju Playground, ‘Let’s Play’ for three weeks.

Meaning of its name is to play not only with the children of this campus but also children of our neighbors too.In steamy weather of July, they learned new woodwork skills to cut woods, make cornerstone, set basic frame. It started without original design, but many ideas were gathered from participants and also from children by asking them questions. Cords were tied, fish and butterfly decorations added according to children’s opinion. Construction had to be paused sometimes due to the storm, workers showered with their sweat due to hot sweaty weather of July of Jeju, however, there were smiling face every time everywhere while they shared snacks and drinks, had fellowship together.

Kang Han Soo(Leader of Operation Department) who led Woodwork Class and playground construction said, “It was so meaningful that mothers who want to make their children pretty playground, 20s through 80s, even non-believer who do not have professional skill worked together.” He also said, “There were feedbacks from participants like ‘It was such a delight during this work’, ‘It feels like this playground became ours to play not just for children for we put all different ideas together with various people.’”

Lee Chang Hoon, director of UofN Jeju campus, said about this project, “It was an example case that we could see how UofN Jeju can work together, what kind of possibility we have.”

After finishing construction, now playground has trampoline, jungle-gym, slide, different kinds of swings, with childlike adults and kids play together satisfying of playground even under blazing sun.I hope UofN Jeju campus to become place where our neighbors feel comfortable to come and visit just as this kids play together at Let’s Play. Passing Playground(writer: Lee Joo Yeon)
Because of constant hot weather, I drove car to get to the base even though my house is near from it.
Sun light has been shining from the morning and the little pumpkin seems bigger and is ripe with its
light. As I pass through the parking lot the playground caught my eyes.
Wooden playground goes well with trees around it, sign “Nol-ja(Let’s Play)” stand out in front of me.
Hans was climbing the poll to trampoline and I started to worry about him and at the same time about
playground. The playground supposed to be for children but my concerns was more about keeping
construction safe rather than children themselves. This made me smile bitterly.
I took so much delight while I was working for 3 weeks with neighbors who doesn’t live church life,
school mothers who have no relations with UofN, neighbor housewives, many people from different
circles whom I rarely work with.
